Malvern is slated to get a new craft brewery this winter, and the three founding members share an interesting Penn State history, writes Emma Dieter at Onward State.

Tom Arnold, Bryan Brockson, and Jason Cartwright were brothers in the Delta Upsilon fraternity at Penn State, and have remained close since 1992.  The three began homebrewing about seven years ago, which reignited the spark which began back in college.

“When we were seniors, we would sit at our favorite table at the Gingerbread Man and say ‘We could definitely run a place like this,’” Cartwright said.

The brewery will be named “Locust Lane” after the street the DU fraternity house stands on in State College.

locust-lane-mapThe idea to name the brewery after Locust Lane came after quite a bit of deliberation. They originally ran through a few ideas tied to Philadelphia, but deep down the group wanted to highlight its brotherhood and the bonds the three formed at Penn State.

The brewery’s motto is “Simply Crafted,” combining the ideas behind DU’s motto “Justice, Our Foundation” and Joe Paterno’s “Success With Honor.”

To continue the PSU theme, even the employee uniforms are modeled after Penn State’s Blue and White.  Their vision is to run the brewery like a community – something important to the founders since the ties that bind Penn State alumni is legendary.
