Coatesville-made Sikorsky’s S-92 Helicopter Now on Top of the World

By

During a ceremony this week at Sikorsky’s commercial helicopter center in Coatesville, the Lockheed-Martin company announced that Alaska had received its first S-92 Search and Rescue helicopter.

The helicopter will be based in North Slope Borough in Alaska, dubbed the ‘Top of the World’ by locals, to provide the surrounding region with a reliable medical evacuation and search and rescue service. With weather in the region some of the harshest anywhere, the aircraft will have to cover over 90,000 square miles in temperatures as low as -55 degrees Celsius.

“With more than 91,000 search-and-rescue missions completed to date globally, the S-92 helicopter is a proven multi-mission platform that can perform in long-range, all weather operations,” said Dana Fiatarone, Sikorsky’s vice president of commercial systems and services.

This marks the fruition of a fantastic year for Sikorsky, as its fleet of 275 S-92 helicopters has now logged over one million flights hours since 2004. The S-92 is also replacing the current fleet of helicopters used to transport the President and is used by 10 other counties to carry their heads of state.
