Fritz Lumber Boarding Up After 153 Years
Downtown Berwyn is symbolically boarding up its oldest business — one that provided the very boards used to build much of the community from the Civil War to today — later this month.
After being ravaged by the Great Recession, the Fritz Lumber Co. will, one last time, clean up its 153-year legacy lived out through long days by five generations of Fritzes and close its doors.
There were no takers for the 1.7 acres with 19th-century buildings still standing, save for Eadeh Enterprises, which paid more than $2 million for the land beneath Fritz Lumber and will likely turn it into new residential and retail spaces, according to a Philly.com report by Michaelle Bond.
Fritz Lumber’s official closing day is Aug. 20, with a clearance auction expected in October. In recent years, fifth-generation owner William “Howard” Fritz IV battled to keep the legacy alive. The 62-year-old will retire and battle instead for his health.
“For so many years, every year was our best year,” he said in the article. Following 2008, “it was just a struggle.”
