The tenth gift from a West Chester family to the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, along with a pair of fundraisers this week, will keep Stanley’s Dream and the hopes of pediatric cancer patients across the country alive and well.

This time the gift was a $5,000 grant for childhood brain cancer research. Brain cancer cut short Henderson High School freshman Stanley Austin Edwards’ dream of sports-filled high school years and a college experience at Notre Dame University, but his legacy is channeling that determination to both helping find a cure for brain cancer and giving others the chance to go to college in his place.

“Stanley never complained during his courageous battle with this disease,” his mother, Donna Edwards, said. “Although his cancer had returned and the prognosis was grim, he was determined that he would beat the odds and fulfill his dream.  Prior to his death, he displayed strength, courage and dignity far beyond his years.”

The Chester County Community Foundation-managed Stanley’s Dream Fund has provided $75,000 to CHOP and given $44,000 to college-bound Chester County students through 29 Stanley’s Dream Fund scholarships.

This week, two local fundraisers will help replenish the fund and provide more hope for the future. The Stanley’s Dream Summer Gala on Friday and the ninth annual Stanley’s Dream Golf Classic on Saturday are both set to unfold at the Downingtown Country Club, with pediatric oncology researcher Peter C. Phillips as the keynote speaker.
