It was exceptionally bright at the Chester County Commissioners’ Sunshine Meeting on Tuesday, as Chairman Terence Farrell belted out a lighthearted challenge to famous singer Pharrell Williams by singing a rendition of “You Are My Sunshine.”

The creative Farrell-to-Pharrell gesture was a move to boost Chester County’s fourth-in-the-nation happiness ranking to the very top, given the name connection and Williams’ hit “Happy,” according to a Chadds Ford Live report by Kathleen Brady Shea.

The challenge was inspired by a recent centenarian luncheon that featured the singing of “You Are My Sunshine,” and Department of Aging Director Sandra Murphy — who accompanied Farrell in performing at the meeting — also committed to a role in the challenge.

“I agreed that I would attempt to get the lovely Pharrell Williams to come and sing in West Chester, and we’d all do this big dance in West Chester as we sing ‘Happy,’” she said in the article.

Fellow commissioners were entertained and impressed by the act.

“I challenge you to find another commissioner anywhere who would do that,” Commissioner Michelle Kichline said.
