A proven record of updating and introducing artifacts to a new generation will arrive at the Chester County Historical Society on July 25 with its new president, Elizabeth M. Laurent. The decision was made public in a release issued by the society Tuesday morning.

Laurent has spent over 15 years working on initiatives at Girard College, most recently as director of historic resources.

“Her successful work at Girard with next-generation and diverse audiences is rare in the history field and will make her an exceptional person to implement the Chester County Historical Society’s strategic plan,” CCHS Board of Trustees Chairman and Gawthrop Greenwood Partner George Zumbano said.

“She also has a track record of attracting financial support through grants and gifts to her projects.”

A highlight of those projects was winning a 2016 Preservation Alliance for Greater Philadelphia Grand Jury Achievement Award for restoring the north and south doors on Girard’s monumental Founder’s Hall. Laurent has also led the replacement of the massive Founder’s Hall roof in 2007 and restoration of 18 of the building’s 40 large windows.

Laurent was the unanimous choice for president at the conclusion of a nationwide talent search to fill the void left by the passing of popular former CCHS president Rob Lukens last August.

“I am honored to lead the Chester County Historical Society, one of the flagship county museums in the nation. I look forward to working with the board, staff, volunteers, members and the broader community, and to becoming a part of West Chester and the Chester County community,” she said.

“Although I have enjoyed my time at Girard, when I was recruited for this position, I could not resist. I feel well aligned with the society’s goals and plans. It is a much beloved museum. This is an exciting time as we create new programming for the gallery, which is to be reinstalled next year.”

CCHS Vice President for Development David B. Reinfeld, who is currently serving as interim president, will step down from his position in July.
