Visitors to Chester County can crash in somebody’s home instead of a hotel, but they’ll still be paying Pennsylvania’s hotel occupancy tax beginning July 1. The state just struck a deal with Airbnb over the tax issue, which is expected to supply state coffers with $1 million per year.

belo-1200x630-a0d52af6aba9463c82017da13912f19f“The agreement with Airbnb places Pennsylvania at the forefront of states responding to the sharing economy and will help level the playing field across the lodging industry,” Gov. Tom Wolf said in a Philly.com report by Linda Loyd.

Airbnb will take care of collecting the 6 percent hotel occupancy tax and sending it on to the state whenever someone rents a place for fewer than 30 days.

The agreement comes just in time for what’s anticipated to be a major Philly area influx of Airbnb-seeking spectators for the Democratic National Convention from July 24 to July 28.
