PhillyDeals Blog Examines the Vanguard IRS Situation
Looking at David Danon, the Vanguard Group’s former tax lawyer, who accused the company of setting aside billions in an untaxed “contingency reserve” and setting its fees artificially low to avoid income tax liability, the philly.com’s PhillyDeals blog tries to determine how much Vanguard would have to pay and what it would cost its shareholders if the IRS agrees with Danon.
The article references Reuven Avi-Yonah, a University of Michigan Law School Professor and tax scholar, who argued last year that Vanguard could owe $35 billion in income taxes and penalties, and University of Chicago Law School Assistant Professor, Daniel Hemel, who wrote a rebuttal titled “Not So Fast,” going deeper into the issue which concludes the cost may only be $10 billion and an increase in fees.
According to Hemel, to reduce future tax liability, “Vanguard could likely restructure itself such that the investment management company is an LLC taxed as a partnership, in which case it would owe no federal corporate income tax.”
Phoenixville High School’s Physics Team Wins Third Place
Considered the underdog of the competition and the only representative of public high schools, the Phoenixville Area High School physics team managed to hold its own against some of the most prestigious schools in the world.
The team managed to beat an impressive list of opponents in the United States Association for Young Physicists Tournaments at Randolph College in Lynchburg, placing third in the finals.
Phoenixville came out on top after the first stage that consisted of six grueling preliminary ‘Physics Fights’ of an hour each, which produced four finalists. After the four round final, the team finished third behind Shenzhen Middle School from China and Rye Country Day School.
“We’re just really excited” said Jay Jennings, Phoenixville’s Physics Department Chair and the team’s advisor.
