Where did Chester County Rank in Alcohol Sales Last Year?

By

More than a dozen expanded and updated wine and liquor stores made their debut across PA last year.

Despite people often making trips to Delaware or New Jersey to stock up on booze, alcohol sales in Pennsylvania have increased 4.2 percent year on year to $2.34 billion for the twelve month period ended June 28, 2015, according to a recent report issued by the Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board.

The report, which also breaks wine and spirit sales down by county, shows that Chester County is ranked fifth in overall sales in the State, well below the top spot held by Allegheny County with sales of $282.7 million or 13.7 percent of total sales.

PLCB Chairman Tim Holden credits better stores with the year-over-year growth in alcohol sales.

The Chairman of the PLCB, Tim Holden, thinks that the rise in sales is from the improvements that the agency has been making to its 619 stores including extensive renovations, better customer service and the ongoing development of its e-commerce services.

“Sales growth is undoubtedly attributable in part to our ongoing effort to relocate and renovate our stores, making them more convenient and appealing to Pennsylvania consumers,” he says in a letter included in the report.

The report also covers in detail the consumption habits and the most popular locations where people pick up their favorite tipple. In fact, the store which has the second highest sales in the state is at 933 Paoli Pike in West Chester totaling $25 million in annual sales, with 2238 Washington Avenue in Philadelphia taking the top spot at $44.7 million.

As to the most popular brands of spirit, for the region that covers the counties of Chester, Bucks, Delaware, Philadelphia and Montgomery, the top five are, in order, Barefoot, Sutter Home, Jacquin’s, Bacardi and Smirnoff. While when it comes to wine, Chester County tends to prefer Champagne and sparkling wine over U.S chardonnay, which is more popular in Philadelphia and Allegheny, or Italian wines which are more commonly sipped in Delaware, Pike and Snyder counties.

Across the state the sale of wine and spirits is pretty much evenly split and when the numbers are broken down by category, vodka brings in the most at $256.9 million, with bourbon following at $114.5 million, and flavored vodka next at $108 million. American made chardonnay brings in $65 million and U.S. cabernet $57.8 million.

Unsurprisingly, the highest amount of sales of all types of alcohol across the state is in December when people get into the holiday spirit, literally.
