Wine aficionados are in for a treat as soon they may soon be able to buy a good quality bottle of wine much closer to their home.

On December 10th, the Pennsylvania Senate moved forward in reforming the current rules on how alcohol is sold, when they approved the recent legislation supported by Governor Tom Wolf, which would remove government control over the sales of wine. The bill may make it possible for wine to be sold by restaurants, delis, and supermarkets in the future.

The bill, which saw a 29-21 vote in favor, would allow these locations to sell up to four bottles of wine, and give casino’s the right to serve liquor, wine, and beer around the clock as opposed to the current 19 hour daily limit. While the bills’ text allows close to 14,000 holders of licenses for takeout beer to now sell wine as well, beer distributors were not included in the text. The sales of hard liquor are also not affected by the bill.

The legislation passed the senate without much debate, except for a protest speech by Republican Senator, Mike Folmer, who remarked that the wrong message would be sent by the state if licenses for alcoholic beverages were expanded while his own legislation to legalize medical marijuana for the ill was being held up.

“Alcohol is one of the most damaging and socially accepted drugs in the world,” Folmer said, adding that it is far more damaging than marijuana.

“I simply do not understand how anyone can be for the proliferation of alcohol and against the use of medical cannabis for sick children, veterans and others,” he remarked. “I find this to be, for me, hypocritical.”

The bill, which was passed as part of a state budget plan that includes $350 million in new school funding, will still need to receive its final approval from the state House of Representatives.
