Coatesville’s Sikorsky Lands Almost $1 Billion in New Defense Contracts

Sikorsky's new CH-53K King Stallion took its maiden voyage this year. It's a heavy-lift cargo copter for the USMC.

It seems that Lockheed Martin’s $9 billion investment in Sikorsky is already starting to pay off as the helicopter maker just managed to snag two hefty new defense contracts

The Department of Defense made an announcement on Monday, detailing a significant number of contracts that have been awarded by the U.S. Army, including two totaling nearly $940 million that have been awarded to Sikorsky Aircraft.

The first, and more profitable contract valued at $833.3 million, is aimed at “Army fixed engineering sustaining, program management/systems engineering sustaining, Army provisioning, Army technical publications, other integrated logistics support, contractor manpower reporting, packaging handling storage and transportation, and advance procurement funding”.

The work for this contract will be performed at Sikorsky’s facilities in Stratford, Connecticut, and is expected to be finalized by the end of the next year. Some assembly work could also be coming to Coatesville, where Sikorsky laid off almost 1,000 employees early this year.

The second contract awarded to the helicopter giant is for a more modest $106.5 million for work based around the H-60 weapons system, including services that cover engineering, technical, and logistic aspects, as well as supplies and support for the parts. The work relating to this contract will be done in Corpus Christi, Texas, with the expected end date of November 30, 2016.

The award of the UH-60 contract to Sikorsky is not particularly surprising, as the company has already performed several similar services for the Department of Defense.

For example, in November last year, Sikorsky Aircraft received a modification contract for $316.17 million for the complete overhaul and repair, as well as recapitalization of the H-60 weapons system.

Prior to that, in 2012, Sikorsky signed an agreement with the Department of Defense worth $7.3 billion to supply the U.S. Armed Forces with the UH-60 Black Hawk tactical transport helicopters, the multi-mission helicopter which entered U.S. Army service for the first time in 1979 when it replaced the Bell UH-1 Iroquois helicopter.
