Dr. Lorna Stuart, a healthcare veteran of 13 years and close to 30 years service within the Phoenixville community, decided to step down from her position at The Clinic in Phoenixville in May.

Stepping into these well respected shoes is Chester County native, Dr. George Spyropoulos, who joined the Clinic in August. He now faces the challenge of succeeding a beloved and very successful predecessor and is tasked with continuing Dr. Stuarts’ exceptional work, as well as finding different ways to expand The Clinic’s services to the community.

Tom Byrd, The Clinic’s executive director, reached out to Spyropoulos after months of searching for the right candidate. Taking the time to do this has paid off, as the transition has gone very smoothly.

“A lot of these folks have been coming to Dr. Stuart and the people here for a number of years,” he said. “I want to come and make the transition as smooth as possible. I’m not really making any real big changes.”

Spyropoulous grew up in Lionville-Marwood and started his medical journey by studying biology at Franklin & Marshall College. He then continued his education at the medical school at the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine, followed by a residency in family medicine at the Medical Center of Delaware, now known as Christiana Care.

After completing his residency, Spyropoulous stayed on as a family physician and faculty member for close to five years before switching to a general practice in West Chester for the last 15 years. He has also taken time during his professional career, to impart his knowledge to medical students around the area.

“I’m trying to give back as much as I learned from my colleagues who were my mentors,” said Spyropoulous. “I think it’s important to train the new folks coming out. I enjoy it. It’s always something I’ve liked to do and I have a knack for it.”¸

As a part of his new duties, Spyropoulos oversees medical operations at The Clinic which has a volunteer staff of 120, and around 25 consultants who are brought in from all areas of medicine to help out during weekdays.

“They’re the lifeblood of this place,” he said. “They make the place run and we rely on these folks and their generosity and their time. They help us basically do what we do here.”
