State Capitol Rushing to Cook Up Thanksgiving Budget Impasse Deal

Lawmakers have put the finishing touches on PA's 2016-2017 budget that Gov. Wolf is set to sign.

pe1wolf12z-aGov. Tom Wolf and Republican leaders may have found the Thanksgiving turkey that will end the state’s budget famine, but the countdown is on for them to come up with the specific fixings that will satisfy everyone at the budget impasse table in Harrisburg.

Both sides announced an outline of the menu for the Thanksgiving deal, and it involves $350 million in new money for public schools and a 1.25 percent increase in the statewide sales tax in order to provide property tax relief, WFMZ reported.

Pennsylvania’s would-be 7.25 percent sales tax would place it behind only California’s 7.5 percent in a ranking of the highest tax rates in the country, the article noted.
