As Chester County residents cozy up to their pillows and dream of a bountiful Thanksgiving cornucopia, one in five local children will pull their covers over a hungry stomach — if they even have a bed to call their own.
Some 625 people sleep without a home right here in suburban Philadelphia, and “on any given day in Chester County, 70,000 people are food insecure,” county commissioners asserted while proclaiming this week as Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week, according to a Daily Local News report.
Fortunately, there is a spreading recognition that “many people do not have housing and are food insecure and need support from citizens and private/public nonprofit service entities.” That’s why hunger and homelessness awareness walks will take center stage this week in Kennett Square, Jennersville and West Chester.

On top of that, Phoenixville’s Kimberton Waldorf School is planning to host a Warmth for All Dinner on Saturday from 5 to 10 p.m., and anyone throughout the county can take up the challenge of living on $5 a day for a week to truly put yourself in the shoes of those who regularly experience hunger.
