The tragedy that crippled the historic covered bridge on Rapps Dam Road just four short years after a $1.5 million overhaul has now been completely remedied. For the second time since 2011, construction crews have replaced ceiling joists, braces and roof cross members, and the bridge reopened to traffic ahead of schedule this week, The Mercury reported.

The rehab fixed damage sustained when an oversized truck struck the Burr Arch truss bridge in April 2014; it is part of a $3.2 million project to repair or restore three cherished Chester County covered bridges.

The reopening comes ahead of schedule after two months of work. The state is paying 20 percent of the bill for just this one part of the project, and it intends to seek reimbursement from the trucking company responsible for the damage.

Work on the other bridges got under way last month, beginning at Valley Forge National Historic Park with the Knox Covered Bridge. The project will then move to the Speakman Covered Bridge on Frog Hollow Road in West Marlborough/East Fallowfield Township next year.
