Sports Gambling Legal in Pennsylvania. Now What?

By

Experts believe that legal sports gambling will draw more people in the doors of casinos.

A recent U.S. Supreme Court ruling has paved the way for legal sports gambling in Pennsylvania and other states, writes Charles Thompson for the Harrisburg Patriot-News.

The decision to strike down a federal law prohibiting sports gambling gives states the right to allow gambling on football, basketball, baseball, and other sports in most states.

What will people be able to bet on? All professional and college sporting events that an authorized “bookie” places odds on.

As a result of the ruling, licensed casinos in Pennsylvania will be eligible to run “sports books,” or take bets on these games. All that is required is that they file petitions with the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board seeking an expansion in their menu of legal games, including how they would physically set it up at their casinos.

Racetrack casinos could also take bets at off-track betting parlors.

PGCB spokesman Doug Harbach said the board’s legal staff is still reviewing the court’s decision, and there is no timetable for the launch of sports betting in Pennsylvania.
