HBO Mini Series to Explore Yonkers Controversy from the 80s

With critically acclaimed The Wire, and its take down of Baltimore’s institutions of power behind him, ex-journalist, TV writer and producer David Simon is now taking on Yonkers.

The show Show Me a Hero which will be based on Lisa Belkin’s book of the same name, will span six episodes and cover the controversy surrounding the building of low-income housing in Yonkers in the 80s, an issue that drew national attention.

The show will focus on Nicholas C. Wasicsko, played by Oscar Isaac, who in 1987 used the housing issue to become the mayor of Yonkers, and then-six-term Mayor of Yonkers Angelo R. Martinelli, who now serves as chairman of Today Media (Main Line Today), who will be played by Jim Belushi.

“It’ll serve a good purpose,” Martinelli says of the series. “There’s a lot of people still talking about the desegregation case that hit Yonkers, which was dramatic and disastrous.”

General Rental Establishes Local Presence

General Rental completed the acquisition of Mechanicsburg based Event Central in April, establishing its presence in the region with a company that has long been a leader in the party rental business throughout central Pennsylvania.

After looking to expand for years, General Rental opted for an already well-established company with a strong customer base rather than starting from scratch.

Eric Schuibbeo, President of General Rentals and Kennett Square resident said that he sees a lot of potential for the business and wants to provide party-planning and event-planning services for larger events using the Event Central name, throughout Chester County and Delaware now that it has the right inventory.

“We feel that even though we’ve been in the party business in southern Pennsylvania for years, the area has been under-served when it comes to large events,” Schuibbeo said.

Kennett Area to Fast Track its Cohesive Hiking and Biking Trail

Kennett Township and Kennett Square are working together on the proposed Red Clay Greenway Trail Program.

This is an ambitious plan to unite the existing and proposed walking and bicycling trails running through the area which, in addition to its recreational benefits, could add as much as $16 billion to the value of housing stock in southeast Pennsylvania.

Michael Guttman, who is working on a contract basis for the township as its grant program coordinator, described the program would create a trail system that would ring the borough of Kennett Square and extending to Chandler Mill Bridge in the southwest, Penn’s Manor in the northwest, and McFarlan road to the northeast.

Kennett Township applied for County and State grants totaling just over $3 million on July 31st, to help pay for the project. The decision about the grants could come as soon as November, with construction commencing as soon as weather permits.
