What follows is simply a short list of writings we found edifying from around the web this week. Grab a cup of coffee this weekend and give them a read. We hope they prove useful in keeping you away from another “think piece” on what color that dress really is. Enjoy.
- “The Shape of Things to Come”, By Ian Parker, from The New Yorker
- Ian Parker’s breathless New Yorker profile of Jony Ive, the man who led design on the iMac, iPhone, and iPad—the product trifecta that made Apple the world’s most valuable company. The article is especially pertinent after iCar rumors splashed across the internet this week.
- “Press Play”, by David Carr, syllabus for a class
- NYT columnist David Carr (RIP) taught only one year at Boston University, but it was long enough to redefine the syllabus genre. His syllabus remains a great example of what was Mr. Carr’s signature no-bullshit approach to everything. There’s little doubt students left the first day partially stunned and totally excited.
- “The Rich Man’s Dropout Club”, by Beth McMurtrie, from The Chronicle of Higher Education
- Five years ago Peter Thiel paid teenagers $100,000 to leave college and chase their dreams as entrepreneurs. At the time Thiel’s fellowship program was lauded by the TED-set and scorned by higher education. But did the idea work?
