Fourth Generation Exton Railroader Tom Myles Helping Revive Stourbridge Line
After successfully launching two passenger train operations in Pennsylvania, the Exton President and CEO of the Myles Group is now bringing expertise learned from four generations of family-run railroading to the northeastern town of Honesdale and its idle tracks.
A.T. “Tom” Myles’ business recently purchased the operating rights of the Delaware, Lackawaxen & Stourbridge (DL&S) Railroad, with hopes to reintroduce passenger cars, cabooses and lots of possibilities, including a future steam locomotive and dining cars, to a 25-mile spur from Honesdale to Hawley and Lackawaxen, according to a report in The News Eagle.
“I think it’s an exciting time for you only because I know what I can do and what I have done,” Myles told community leaders and interested residents in the article.
What he’s done is turn a struggling 300-car-per-year and 1.5-employee Wellsboro & Corning Railroad into a more-than-8,500-car-per-year success employing 150.
While some inbound freight and maybe shipping out quarry stone may accompany the revival plan, Myles’ primary goal is resurrecting passenger excursions for residents and tourists, an attraction that the Wayne County Chamber of Commerce kept alive for many years and which drew 10,000 to 15,000 passengers in 2007 shortly before the trains sat idle.
