Family, friends, and colleagues of State Trooper Kenton Iwaniec recently gathered in front of Pennsylvania Troop J’s Avondale Barracks to dedicate a section of the local highway to him, writes Richard Gaw for the Chester County Press.

During the heartfelt ceremony, it was announced that the part of Route 41 between Route 926 and U.S. Route 1 is now the Trooper Kenton Iwaniec Memorial Highway. Speakers at the ceremony included Judge Patrick Carmody, State Sens. John Rafferty and Andrew Dinniman, Rep. John Lawrence, and Iwaniec’s parents, Ken and Deb Iwaniec.

During the event, gratitude was given to those who helped the idea become reality.

On March 27, 2008, Trooper Iwaniec, then 24, was driving home after his shift at the Avondale Barracks, when an impaired driver hit his vehicle head on. Iwaniec was flown to Christiana Hospital but died from his injuries.

Since then, his family established the Trooper Kenton Iwaniec Foundation, which honors DUI victims while raising awareness of impaired driving. It also encourages the community to be a positive influence to reduce impaired driving.
