Organic Just The Tip Of The Iceberg For Phillips Mushrooms

By

Mushrooming demand for organically-grown product at Phillips Mushroom Farms is just one of the leading efforts at the Kennett Square gourmet operation.

A commitment to sustainability has led the well-established manufacturer to switch from cardboard mushroom trays to recycled food-safe plastic ones as well as partner with other producers to create blended products.

“Besides extending the cost of beef, which continually increases, blended products have lower calories, less fat and higher nutrition,” National Sales Manager Kevin Donovan said in a report published by The Produce News. “It is an amazing concept, and one that has no negatives. People even say that dishes made with blended protein and mushrooms are more flavorful. One person said to me that she made her grandmother’s ‘famous’ meatballs by blending half protein and half mushrooms, and that they were even more delicious than those her grandmother made.”

However, the article also noted that the mushroom industry is being squashed by increasing pressure from labor, composting and transportation.
