Chesterbrook Drug Company AmerisourceBergen Sued For Firing Employee Over Depression

By

Specialty pharmaceutical services giant AmerisourceBergen supports makers of depression drugs all the time, but the Chesterbrook-based company was just slapped with a lawsuit for much more than a lack of support for one of its own — it’s accused of firing an employee in the midst of a bout with post-partum depression.

The U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission accusation centers on the case of reimbursement case advocate Meron Debru, who was allegedly fired after requesting disability leave on top of her maternity leave, then reinstated but forced to compete for a job rather than being transferred to a vacant position, according to an EEOC press release published on noodls.

“It is incumbent on employers to provide reasonable accommodations for women who need them due to pregnancy-related disabilities, such as extending unpaid leave or transferring the employee to a vacant position for which she is qualified,” EEOC Regional Attorney Debra M. Lawrence said in the announcement. “Forcing an employee to try to find a new position within the company on her own does not meet the company’s affirmative obligation to provide a reasonable accommodation by transferring her to a vacant job.”
