Social Media Security A Must

By

In the past week the weaknesses of Social Media security has come under the magnifying glass again. While privacy is something we expect as a default in our lives, in an interconnected this level of privacy is often not enforced as well as it should be. Internet Security is a hot topic again and how to secure personal accounts online has been discussed a lot lately.

The good news is that there are some very good tools available from these sites to make breaking into social media accounts very hard.

First, choose a good password. Passwords are the weak link in the chain. Any password can be broken; it’s just a matter of time. This is a convenient way to identify who you are, but it should not be used as a fool-proof lock. Passwords should not be a child’s name, a pet’s name, your birthday, or any commonly observed information. Passwords should be hard to guess and require an explanation if you share them with anyone.

Second, Enable two-step authentication on sites that support it. What is “2 step authentication” and how can it help users? Another source of identity is referenced to confirm identity. Typically this involves a text sent to your phone with a set of numbers that are required before the user is granted full access to a website or service the first time that it’s called. For example, if I was logging into Facebook on a new computer I’d need to provide a code, sent to my cell phone, before I could log in. Many employers use 2 step authentication to verify access.

Here are some examples of websites where 2 Factor Authentication is available are listed below:

The General rule of thumb is DO NOT upload any photos, videos, or other information to an online storage that you do not want publicly displayed. If you need to back files up online, encrypt your files prior to the upload to protect the contents.

Another important rule is to remember that when you click delete online it never goes away. It is still online and often can be accessed. If a smartphone is used, it will often back up photos / videos taken in case the phone is lost / damaged. Make sure that photos uploaded to these services are also removed as well.

If you are still intent on taking a “unique” shot or video, stick to old-fashioned techniques, the Polaroid will give you what you’re looking for without the risk of sharing your “Bits” with the world.
