County Job Seekers Get Hand Up From Governor, Congressman

By

Lawmakers recently announced two opportunities to help the 6.4 percent of people in Pennsylvania who are unemployed.

Pennsylvania Governor Tom Corbett has unveiled Big Interview, an online interactive training tool on the JobGateway site to help job seekers learn interview skills.

Also, Congressman Patrick Meehan is inviting constituents to a free job fair on Saturday, March 29, at the American Legion Post 422 in Honeybrook. The job fair will run from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the post, 4820 Horseshoe Pike, Honeybrook.

Meehan said he is pulling together local employers including M&T Bank, DeVry University and East Penn Manufacturing for an opportunity for job seekers to meet with companies who are hiring.

Job hunters can prep for that event and future interviews by training online with the BigInterview on the state’s job gateway web site, www.jobgateway.pa.gov. The site teaches interviewing skills via videos, articles and virtual interview sessions that it says will make you “irresistible to employers.”

“By connecting qualified candidates with open positions, JobGateway SM makes securing a good paying job even easier for Pennsylvanians,” said Corbett.

According to Corbett, JobGateway had more than 800,000 visits in January and averages more than 10,000 new job postings each day.

An independent investigation of the site, however, revealed many of the job postings to be bogus. Some help wanted ads are posted to the site via Craigslist and other portals and job seekers need to be cautious in responding. You may find yourself being asked to set up a bank account so your international executive boss may deposit funds into your account to rent a local office. Sure thing!

Job seekers may also find individuals and agencies fishing to make a job of the applicant by posting opportunities which are not legitimate. Some agencies also post ads for jobs the county or companies have already posted, with no authority to get the applicant in the door there.

Trainers at the local CareerLink office at 350 East Harmony St. in Coatesville hold “employment essentials” workshops and workshops to help job seekers use JobGateway.

One important tip from CareerLink is to look at the ad to see if it has a gold Pennsylvania keystone symbol posted after the word “source.” This means a state employee has verified the job as a legitimate opportunity.
