Longwood Gardens in Kennett Square is looking up with a $90 million project to replace the 83-year-old main fountain garden.

“New Heights: The Fountain Revitalization Project” is the initiative that will install the latest fountain technology, improve guest access to the garden, and add innovative new elements that honor the visionary original design by Longwood Gardens founder Pierre S. du Pont.

10.1.2014 Longwood FountainsGroundbreaking will be in mid-October and the main fountain garden will reopen in spring 2017.

“New Heights is a part of our long-term commitment to delivering a world-class experience for all our guests,” said Paul B. Redman, executive director.

Complete revitalization plans are here.

Among the highlights, Longwood will reopen the elegant south wall, which has been closed for the past 20 years. A trellis bridge will connect to the Fountain Terrace, and there will be new seating and a renovated pump house lobby.

Redman said Longwood’s trustees have been planning the project for many years.  Contractors are architectural firm Beyer Blinder Belle; landscape architecture firm West 8; and Fluidity Design Consultants of Los Angeles.

The project will incorporate French and Italian elements and make the fountain garden a world-class experience, Redman said. Longwood will remain open throughout the project and is planning special one-time, summer programming and events to provide audiences with new cultural and horticultural experiences.
