Baldwin’s Book Barn has long been a beloved place for book lovers in Chester County. It recently made a list of the best independent bookstores in America, in a roundup written by Kat Chen for Condé Nast Traveler.
Housed inside a five-story stone barn built in 1822, Baldwin’s Book Barn was founded by William and Lilla Baldwin in 1946 and has spent the better part of a century accumulating literary history.
The West Chester landmark has been home to thousands of used, rare, and collectible books, along with maps, prints, and antiques. Steep staircases connect floor after floor of shelves that are packed into stone-walled rooms, create an atmosphere that is like a “living archive.”
At the center of it all is 93-year-old manager Carol Pfaff Rauch, who came to the barn as a volunteer in 2010 and never really left. She acts as Baldwin’s lighthouse keeper, shining a bright flame with a keen eye for new additions to add to the overflowing shelves and tables. Each week, she takes calls from families regarding estate collections, making house visits with her daughter to hand-select books that deserve a second life at the barn.
“We were in touch at one point with Guinness [World Records] to say that we were the world’s largest used bookstore,” said Rauch. “They said, ‘Count them.’ I’m not about to do that! We have over 25,000 square feet and over 300,000 books.”
For anyone who loves reading, history, or local destinations, Baldwin’s remains one of Chester County’s most memorable places to visit.
