With the rise in data center applications in Pennsylvania, North Coventry Township has reached a new stage as township officials consider drafting an ordinance, writes Evan Brandt for The Daily Local News.
On Monday, North Coventry supervisors authorized township manager Erica Batdorf to begin preliminary research that could ultimately be used in creating an ordinance regarding data center development.
Batdorf will work with the township engineer and solicitor to coordinate steps for drafting an ordinance, and the results will be shared with supervisors within a couple of weeks.
Following the regroup, township supervisors may decide to impose a “curative amendment,” which would serve as a 180-day moratorium. Meaning, supervisors can declare the zoning area “deficient” and make necessary changes within that period.
Supervisors will weigh all options when deciding whether or not to move forward with the curative amendment, specifically analyzing what changes can realistically be completed in that time frame.
At present, there are no active requests for a data center in North Coventry Township. Earlier this year, supervisors quickly denied a proposal for a smaller data center off of Route 724 after strong resident opposition.
However, given the upward trend in data center plans in nearby East Vincent and East Whiteland Townships, new proposals may arrive at any time.
