For Marlena Mays, her work is rooted in compassion — and a commitment to supporting individuals and families in meaningful, lasting ways.
As Program Manager for The Arc of Chester County’s Agency With Choice program, Mays oversees a team of coordinators who collectively support more than 200 families. Her role includes hiring and training staff, ensuring compliance with state guidelines, and maintaining high standards of care for individuals with intellectual disabilities and their loved ones.
“Helping and supporting our families to receive the best care possible for their loved one with disabilities is what I enjoy most about my job,” Mays stated.

Mays, who currently lives in Kennett Square, was born in Philadelphia and spent her childhood moving throughout the region, including time in Norristown, Lincoln University, and Coatesville. She says those experiences helped shape her adaptability and connection to the communities she now serves.
She graduated from Coatesville Area Senior High School and later earned a bachelor’s degree in Gerontology from California University of Pennsylvania. Her career in the Intellectual Disabilities and Autism field began in 2016, starting as a direct support professional before advancing into roles with increasing responsibility.
Her proudest professional accomplishment came with her promotion to Program Manager — a milestone that allowed her to expand her impact.
“With this promotion, I’ve been able to make an even greater positive impact on the lives of those with disabilities and their families in our community,” she stated. “It is extremely gratifying work.”
Mays credits Jillian Simmons, Assistant Director of the Agency With Choice program, as the most influential mentor in her career.
“She continues to be an invaluable resource and a wonderful leader,” Mays stated. “She models the manager I strive to be; she’s always available for support and a wealth of knowledge for others.”
Outside of work, Mays enjoys spending time at local spots like Round 1 in Exton and Painting with a Twist in West Chester, as well as exploring restaurants such as Gran Rodeo Mexican Bar & Grill and Lorenzo and Sons Pizza.
Looking ahead, Mays is focused on building a future close to home. Having recently gotten married, she says that at the top of her bucket list is buying a home and starting a family in Chester County — a goal that reflects both her personal and professional commitment to community.
Mays and the rest of the 2026 Class of VISTA NextGen Superstars will be honored at the Awards Reception & Celebration on Thursday, Apr. 30, at the Penn State Great Valley Conference Center in Malvern.
