For Dr. Marcus Swinson, education is more than a career; it’s a pathway to changing lives and expanding opportunity.
Formerly as Director of Branch Campus Operations at Delaware County Community College’s Downingtown Center, and now in his new role as Dean of Students, Swinson has focused his work on improving access, removing barriers, and creating systems that help students succeed. His leadership spans operational strategy, academic planning, and student engagement, all aligned with the College’s broader mission.
“What I enjoy most about this role is the ability to directly influence student success,” Swinson stated. “Whether it’s improving course schedules or strengthening pathways, it’s about helping students move forward and feel supported.”

Swinson, who lives in the Pottstown area, was born and raised in West Philadelphia, where he grew up alongside his parents and three brothers. His first job at 16, working as a Fry Cook at McDonald’s, instilled an early sense of responsibility and work ethic.
He graduated from West Philadelphia High School before earning a bachelor’s degree in Sports Management from Temple University. He later completed a master’s degree in Clinical Counseling at Cairn University and, most recently, earned his Doctorate in Education in Higher Education Leadership from Wilmington University.
Throughout his career, Swinson has remained focused on creating meaningful opportunities for students. One of his proudest accomplishments came in 2022, when he helped guide a cohort of 26 dual enrollment students to complete associate degrees and certificates before graduating high school.
“I am most proud of those students,” he said. “Their hard work and determination changed their future outcomes for the better.”
That achievement earned Swinson the College President’s Award, but he remains focused on the broader impact of his work — supporting students at every stage of their academic journey.
He credits his parents, Dr. Walter and Louise Swinson, as the greatest influence on his career.
“They instilled in me the values of dedication and sacrifice,” Swinson reflected. “They lived those values every day.”
Outside of work, Swinson enjoys spending time at one of his favorite local spots, Kurtz Fish Farm, where he can relax and enjoy fishing.
Looking ahead, his goals include both personal exploration and lifelong passions. At the top of his bucket list is a two-week trip to Venice to experience its art, culture, and cuisine. (He also hopes to experience one more Dallas Cowboys Super Bowl victory!)
