Local Nonprofit to Transform Historic Oxford Theater into New Performing Arts Center

Following a devastating fire in 2023, the historic Oxford Theatre will be renovated into a new performing arts center, The Pearl Theatre on 3rd.

A new performing arts center, The Pearl, Theatre on 3rd, is set to open in the historic Oxford Theatre, writes staff for The Daily Local News.

The Pearl, a registered nonprofit organization, formally revealed the name and logo earlier this month. The new facility will house a main stage, a black-box theater, educational classrooms, and additional event space.

So far, the organization has received state funds and private grants to construct the new building.

Formerly the Oxford Theatre Project, The Pearl has seen several development challenges in recent years.

Historically, the Oxford Theatre served as downtown Oxford’s central arts hub from 1922 to 1956.

The Pearl set out to renovate the theater in the early 2010s. However, a devastating fire in 2023 destroyed the building and the surrounding block.

Organizers persisted through the loss to continue the project and bring live theatre back to southern Chester County. Thanks to years of fundraising and community building, the organization continues to thrive, and The Pearl Theatre on 3rd is now in its design phase.

The center’s name honors the project’s journey through difficult times. In a social media post revealing the name, The Pearl team wrote, “A pearl is not planned; it is formed under pressure, shaped by time, and made more beautiful for what it endured.”
