The Pennsylvania Turnpike is preparing to roll out a new pilot program that will alert drivers to unpaid tolls through text messages, reports Bryanna Gallagher for 6abc.
Through the new program, officials will be able to speed up the collection process, creating a more convenient alternative to sending invoices through the mail.
The system is still in the development phase, as officials consider the text message details.
Other states with similar text programs have had success collecting unpaid bills, with increases in collections of seven to 10 percent.
However, despite the convenience, drivers are cautious about the program due to the recent increase in toll-related text scams.
“I think just keep it simple,” said New Jersey resident Morgan Wormuth. “Mail it out, or just pay your fines… I think it would be hard for people to differentiate if it’s a scam or if you really owe money.”
Pennsylvania Turnpike officials have confirmed that any legitimate text messages won’t include a request for direct payment.
The pilot program is planned to launch this summer.
