Mahjong Grows in Popularity Thanks to Main Line Clubs and Classes

The 18th-century game has remained popular among Chester County residents thanks to mahjong leagues, lessons, and game nights.

A popular game for centuries, mahjong has made its way to Chester County with the help of several local clubs, writes Caroline O’Halloran for SAVVY Main Line.

The traditional Chinese game typically involves four players using various strategies to complete sets of tile pairs before their competitors. The game serves not only as a puzzle-type challenge, but as a social outlet for new friendships and camaraderie.

Newly opened in Wayne, Main Line Mahjong offers mahjong open play, group and private lessons, and a formal league for competition.

Mahjong enthusiasts Suzett Hamilton, Karla Crockett, and Megan Boss opened the space after teaching part-time in homes and community spaces over the last year. The studio, located in the Eagle Village Shops complex, houses six tables amid tropical Palm Beach-inspired interiors.

Also in Wayne, restaurant Maison Lotus offers monthly mahjong nights. For a set fee of $95, players receive instruction from expert Lee Tanner and engage in casual play with a three-course buffet dinner.

Owner Pearl Somboosong shared that mahjong nights typically sell out three months in advance.

Down the street, Louella Boutique also hosts classes and game play at the shop. The trend has given way to multigenerational connections as players across ages and locations gather for friendly competition and community joy.
