Chester County Sees Fewest Annual Overdose Deaths in Nearly a Decade

In 2025, Chester County saw 55 substance use-related fatalities, marking the fewest annual overdose deaths since 2015.

Chester County saw a landmark low in substance use deaths in 2025, marking the fewest annual overdose deaths in nearly a decade, writes Kenny Cooper for WHYY.

The county reported 55 confirmed accidental overdose deaths in 2025, the lowest number since 2015. The figure includes fatalities related to alcohol, cocaine, fentanyl, and other substances.

The Chester County Board of Commissioners reported the news on Monday in a joint statement. Commissioners credited community organizations and county-wide partnerships for supporting substance use treatment and harm reduction efforts throughout the county.

County officials initially reported the potential decrease in overdose deaths last October.

The 2025 report comes amid a steady decline in substance-related deaths over the last nine years. After a jump from 74 in 2015 to 144 in 2017, the number began to fall in the following years, all the way to 69 fatalities in 2024.

In Monday’s statement, Chester County Department of Drug and Alcohol Services director Jamie Johnson stressed the value of effective treatment for those struggling with substance use. Looking to the future with hope for even fewer losses, Johnson said, “One life lost to overdose is one too many, and one day we hope to see zero overdose fatalities in Chester County.”
