Downingtown Middle School student Yohaan Damani will represent Chester County at the nationwide level after his recent victory at the Chester County Spelling Bee, writes staff for The Daily Local News.
Damani won the local bee last week with the award-winning word “predecessor.” The event took place at Collegium Performing Arts Center on Feb. 11.
Stetson Middle School student Santosh Kandasamy placed second. Lionville Middle School’s Brooke Bainbridge and Saints Simon and Jude student Cadel McBee tied for third.
Each student placed first in their sending school’s competition to qualify for the countywide bee. Forty-one students competed to spell a total of 135 words.
With his win, Damani will advance to the Scripps National Spelling Bee set for May 26-28 in Washington, D.C.
On top of the invitation to nationals, he also received a one-year subscription to Merriam-Webster Unabridged Online, a Barnes and Noble gift card, and a Scrabble board game, among other prizes.
About his win and the upcoming national competition, Damani said, “I’m excited to be on the national stage and represent Chester County. I started preparing for the spelling bee just for fun, so winning the competition is both a surprise and a rewarding accomplishment.”
