Dig Into Philadelphia Region’s History as ‘Squash Hub’ of America

Founded in 1973, Berwyn Squash & Fitness Club serves as the first commercial squash club in the United States.

Among the many other local squash spots, Berwyn Squash & Fitness Club plays a key role in earning Philadelphia its larger reputation as the “Squash Hub” of America, writes J.F. Pirro for Main Line Today.

The club opened in 1973 as the first commercial squash club in the United States. In addition to the club’s longevity, owner and lead squash pro Dominic Hughes also earned his thirtieth Master’s title in 2023.

With options for both members and non-members, the club boasts singles and doubles squash courts, in addition to private lessons and summer camps. The calendar of events also includes social nights and squash tournaments.

In addition to its namesake sport, the space also offers pickleball open play and lessons, as well as a full fitness studio with personal trainers.

Berwyn Squash & Fitness Club serves as a major institution within greater Philadelphia, specifically the region’s history with squash.

Main Line educator Susan Gross helped establish squash as a sport for the general public, moving away from its previous localization to clubs and private institutions. While she taught French and Spanish at Harriton High School, she approached the school’s athletic director about exploring public school squash in 1995.

The accessibility of the sport has continued to grow, particularly with the 2021 construction of Arlen Specter U.S. Squash Center at Drexel University. The center will host the U.S. High School Squash Championships this month, and also serves as Team USA’s squash training hub ahead of the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles.
