West Chester Attorney Supports Local Family as Federal Government Re-Examines Decade-Old Death

Attorney Joe Podraza represents the family of Ellen Greenberg as the federal government begins an investigation into her controversial death.

Attorney Joe Podraza, of West Chester-based law firm Lamb McErlane PC, is representing a Philadelphia family in a decades-long murder investigation, write Brian Sheehan and Emily Rose Grassi for NBC10 Philadelphia.

Podraza represents the family of Ellen Greenberg, a teacher who tragically died in her Manayunk apartment in 2011. The 27-year-old, who was found by her fiancé, was stabbed 20 times.

Though the original investigation ruled Greenberg’s death a murder, it was later changed to a suicide.

Greenberg’s death has remained controversial in the fifteen years since it happened. Greenberg’s family argues that the evidence suggests she was murdered, and that the suicide ruling was to cover up a poor investigation.

The original medical examiner has since stated under oath that Greenberg’s death should not be ruled a suicide. However, an independent investigation by the city’s new medical examiner once again indicated that Greenberg died by suicide.

Recently, The Philadelphia Inquirer reported that the U.S. Attorney’s office for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania requested documents from the Philadelphia Police Department to determine if her death was properly investigated.

Confirmation of federal involvement remains unclear per the U.S. Attorney’s standard practice. However, the prospect gives hope to Greenberg’s family after decades of pain.

About the new developments in the case, Joe Podraza said, “Hearing the news of a federal investigation into any part of Ellen’s murder is the greatest gift that Sandee and Josh could ever receive. They have waited so long for this and we will do whatever we can to assist in solving this heinous crime and obtaining justice for Ellen.”
