Word-of-Mouth Bakery Brings Delicious Baked Goods to Toughkenamon

Without a phone number or website, Toughkenamon’s Blacklab Breads relies on word-of-mouth praise for its delicious breads and sandwiches.

The elusive Blacklab Breads is bringing delicious breads, sandwiches, and treats to Toughkenamon, writes Caroline Roosevelt for Chester County Press.

The bakery operates without a phone number or formal website. But through Facebook, Instagram, and simple word-of-mouth, the local spot has earned a loyal fanbase that returns weekend after weekend.

Customers recommend the Maritozzi, a sweet brioche roll filled with whipped cream and topped with confectioner’s sugar. Other fan favorites include the cannoli and bread loaves.

Owner Barry Ciarocchi originally worked as a pastry chef at Bakery Street in Philadelphia. He pivoted to owning his own business by opening Blacklab Breads in 2023.

In the years since, the bake shop has become known for its sweet and savory from-scratch goods. Sandwiches come on homemade bread, with fillings like hummus, roast beef, and coleslaw, also made in-house.

The bakery team works Monday through Sunday to design the weekly menu and plan for the weekend. Ciarocchi usually arrives at the bakery at midnight on Saturday and works all night to prepare for the line of hungry customers.

Blacklab Breads is open Saturdays and Sundays from 10 AM to 2 PM. While they don’t have a website, specific menu items and more information can be found on the bakery’s Facebook and Instagram.
