“She is someone who brings peace and calm during times of storms. She is the embodiment of what we want everyone our community to be: humble, kind, selfless, and supportive.”
These words from Church Farm School Associate Head of School Tiffany Scott about Julie Wickland at CFS’s annual employee recognition ceremony brought nods of agreement throughout the Chapel of the Atonement.
There are likely few members of the CFS community who haven’t interacted with Wickland, the Assistant to the Head of School. She has been the smiling face greeting guests since 2010. She is the beautiful voice singing in the Chapel, the magic-maker for CFS’s annual Christmas Pageant and school decor, the efficient organizer of so much on campus. It’s difficult to put into words the ways in which her passion for CFS has made a positive impact.
At the recent ceremony, Wickland was honored for her service to the school through stirring speeches, presentation of service awards, and a standing ovation. As she prepares to depart CFS for a well-deserved retirement, Wickland — who graduated from Immaculata University, then spent years teaching music and music therapy before transitioning to a corporate career — discussed her most memorable experiences at the school.
How did you end up at Church Farm School?
I was working in professional development for the Life Sciences Team at Computer Sciences Corp. in 2009, when I was laid off and saw the posting for an Assistant to the Head of School at Church Farm School. It turned out that I had a friend who happened to be a relative of (former Head of School) Ned Sherrill’s wife, Lizette, and I had the good fortune of getting an interview.
What do you consider some key accomplishments during your time at Church Farm School?
My involvement in the Women’s Group, which led to our revitalizing the Griffin Clothes Closet. Helping create the Recognition of Service Program for faculty and staff. The many partnerships I’ve helped to coordinate, especially with the Devon Horse Show, St. Francis-in-the-Fields, and the CCIU Discover Program that serves three key areas at the school: Horticulture, the Clothes Closet and the Kitchen Group. The Pageant and the Chapel Council are especially meaningful to me, as they’ve allowed me to get more involved with the kids.
What’s your favorite spot on campus?
The Chapel. I still remember my interview way back in August 2010, walking into the Chapel and being blown away by the beautiful fieldstone. I was awestruck. Mesmerized. It’s particularly beautiful at Christmastime.
Why is Church Farm special?
“My time here is short. What can we do more beautifully?” is a quote that comes alive at Church Farm School. The people who work here — they love the mission and they love the boys. For the last 15 years, CFS has been a second home to me.
