Dissecting the Question That Defines Great Leadership

Each part of the Central Question carries weight, and together, they form a tool for self-leadership and intentional living.

In our recent articles, we’ve been exploring the one question every leader should be asking:

“What choice can I make and action can I take in this moment to create the greatest net value?”

It’s critical to use the question exactly as it is — every word matters. Each part carries weight, and together, they form a tool for self-leadership and intentional living.

“What choice … ”

The only thing we truly control is our conscious choices. Every day we make hundreds, sometimes thousands of them. The invitation is to make those choices more thoughtfully, more value-genic. Pausing to evaluate helps us shift from automatic reactions to deliberate, value-creating responses.

“ … can I make … ”

We can’t choose for others, and sometimes our choices feel limited by circumstances. Yet, even recognizing that we don’t have enough information is itself a choice. There is no absolute “should” or “have to.” Self-leadership begins with embracing the freedom we all have — to choose our mindset, our attitude, and our response.

“ … and action can I take … ”

Choices are powerful, but they mean little without action. Even choosing no action is still a decision with consequences. Ultimately, progress only happens when choices move into action.

“ … in this moment … ”

Life is a string of moments. Some feel ordinary, others turn out to be defining. A single moment can shift the trajectory of your life — or your leadership. The quality of your life and work is shaped by the quality of your choices and actions in these moments.

“ … to create … ”

Value isn’t something we simply receive — it’s something we generate. Relationships, businesses, and communities thrive only when they create more value than they consume. Without that, they wither.

“ … the greatest net value?”

This is what real success is all about: creating value that enhances the quality of life for yourself and others, both now and in the future. And value extends far beyond money — it includes trust, growth, connection, and impact.

Every word in the Central Question is intentional. Together, they form a compass that leaders can return to, moment by moment, to align choices and actions with what truly matters most. Learn more at Achievable.com.
