Local police departments are taking steps towards accessibility for all with the new “Blue Envelope” program, writes Bill Rettew for The Daily Local News.
The Blue Envelope Program is a voluntary program designed to support autistic drivers during traffic stops and police interactions. Participants receive a blue envelope that will keep their documentation and instructions for a police pull-over all in one place.
The envelope can hold their driver’s license, registration, and insurance paperwork all in one place. The two-sided envelope also features a disclosure of the driver’s support needs, as well as text on both sides with guidance for both the driver and the police officer.
The directions instruct drivers on what to expect during a police interaction. For officers, the envelope provides insight into behaviors often exhibited by people with autism and guidance on providing comfort and completing the interaction safely.
The Blue Envelope program comes as a way to support drivers with disabilities during what can be a stressful interaction. Bright police lights and flashlights, loud sounds from radios and sirens, and other stimuli can potentially overwhelm drivers with autism.
With the readily accessible blue envelope, the process becomes more streamlined and less distressing for drivers with higher support needs.
Many local police departments have embraced the program, including the West Goshen Police Department. Police Chief Michael Carroll helped introduce the program in Chester County to promote safety and access for all Chester County residents.
