As National Nonprofit Day approaches on Aug. 17, Habitat for Humanity of Chester County (HFHCC) is proud to highlight a powerful reminder of what’s possible when communities come together for a shared purpose.
One such moment took place recently in California, where over 500 volunteers gathered for San Gabriel Valley Habitat for Humanity’s Walls of Hope Initiative, a two-day build dedicated to helping families recover from the devastating Eaton Fire.
Held on Jun. 26-27, the Walls of Hope event marked the beginning of construction for homes being rebuilt in Altadena, where many homeowners were either uninsured or underinsured.
This initiative is more than just a disaster response; it is a movement of resilience and compassion. Neighbors, local businesses, schools, faith groups, and fire survivors came together to take the first tangible steps toward recovery.
Among those who participated was Habitat for Humanity of Chester County’s Chief Executive Officer, Chris Wiseman, who reflected on the experience: “Working side by side with fellow Habitat leaders on a build site in Los Angeles was an inspiring reminder of why we do this work. No matter where we come from, we’re united by a shared mission — to build homes, communities, and hope. Rolling up our sleeves together reinforced the power of collaboration and the deep impact of every home we help create.”
During the event, volunteers achieved incredible progress, including:
- 160 wall panels constructed;
- 32 cabinets assembled;
- 6 table bases built;
- and 18 furniture pieces painted.
The effort comes on the heels of several major milestones, including the first rebuild permit in Altadena, the first approved plans through L.A. County’s new process, and the first grant from the Altadena Builds Back Foundation, which will help rebuild 22 homes for families who lost generational properties.
As the six-month anniversary of the fire nears, Walls of Hope stands as a testament to the impact nonprofits can make, not just through housing, but through healing.
On National Nonprofit Day, HFHCC celebrates this spirit of unity and remains committed to building a world where every family has a safe place to call home.
