When Crozer Health closed, many children lost their healthcare, particularly in Chester.
A health fair today hopes to fill in the gaps, writes Kayla Yup for The Philadelphia Inquirer.
The “Back to School Bash” took place on Saturday at 151 W. Fifth Street in Chester. It provided free physical exams, vaccinations, and lead testing to children in grades K-12.
It’s also a way for struggling families to find new providers.
Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, Nemours, and other groups will have tables with health information.
“As much as we can get healthcare providers to come to this area to provide free services, that is, at this point, our only chance for survival,” said Kristin Ball Motley, the health commissioner for the city of Chester.
The fair is a collaboration between the City of Chester Bureau of Health, the Delaware County Health Department, Nemours Children’s Health, State Sen. John Kane, ChesPenn Health Services, and The Foundation for Delaware County.
Jenna Higgins, a Nemours Children’s Health pediatrician in Media, said Chester is now a “health care desert” with the closing of Crozer Health.
