A Chadds Ford mainstay since 1950, Hank’s Place reopened its doors on July 15 after a nearly four-year hiatus following the unprecedented damage caused by Hurricane Ida in 2021, writes Jen Samuel for The Daily Local News.
The restaurant was bustling over the weekend, with every seat full as servers poured coffee and delivered homemade food to hungry patrons. The counter was filled with flowers from supporters congratulating the restaurant’s reopening.
“Hank’s Place has been a beloved social hub in Chadds Ford since the 1950s, a place where community members could always be assured of good food and good company,” said U.S. Rep Mary Gay Scanlon.
To reopen the space, wife and husband Kathryn and Anthony Young had to raze the old building and construct a new one with flood protections, including elevating the structure by around ten feet.
The couple have not disclosed the full cost of the new building but confirmed it was a multi-million dollar project. They expressed gratitude to Scanlon, who helped them secure the federal funding needed for recovery.
The new building is roughly the same size inside as the old restaurant, measuring around 3,000 square feet.
