Two Saint Joseph’s University alumni made a drastic career change to open Elverson’s Botanery Barn Distillling, writes staff for St. Joseph’s Magazine.
Originally, siblings Don and Scott Avellino worked in the automotive repair industry before opening the distillery.
Now, the brothers build community and joyful interactions with their customers at the Botanery Barn.
Now open for nearly a decade, the distillery sits on eight acres of land surrounded by gardens and scenic views. Previously, the barn itself was used as both a dairy barn and music hall in the 1900s.
The dining room at Botanery Barn Distilling features a farm-to-table menu that uses local, seasonal ingredients. Appetizers include chili garlic nuts, a mac and cheese tart, and shrimp bisque. Entrées include seafood, pasta, and sandwich options.
The distillery produces their Revivalist Gin and Resurgent Botanical Whiskey infused with local and global botanicals.
The Avellino’s shared that regulars and the community connections are what made their career transition worthwhile. The duo said, “There’s something magical about meeting folks from all walks of life and seeing their faces light up when they’ve experienced what you’ve created; it’s like being a part of their story for a moment.”
