This summer, rising theatre talent will step into the spotlight with Performance Lab’s Little Shop Teen Takeover, a two-week advanced musical theatre studio for students entering grades 8 through pre-college. Running Jul. 14-25, the program delivers a unique blend of professional training and stage experience — all inspired by the award-winning musical Little Shop of Horrors.
Performance Labs at People’s Light are the most advanced training opportunities offered by the theatre and are open to high school-age actors by audition only. These intensive programs are a hybrid educational experience, combining conservatory-style masterclasses led by People’s Light Teaching Artists with focused rehearsal for a final showcase. Participants build skills in musical theatre performance, character development, and ensemble collaboration — tools essential to serious young actors preparing for future stage roles.
In Little Shop Teen Takeover, each day is split between two key components. Half the day is dedicated to conservatory-style training, with professional artists guiding students in acting, choreography, and vocal performance. The other half focuses on rehearsing musical selections from Little Shop of Horrors, culminating in a final showcase on Friday, Jul. 25 at 7:00 PM.
Rather than presenting fully staged scenes, the showcase features a concert-style performance designed to spotlight each performer through solo and ensemble numbers. It all takes place on the Leonard C. Haas Stage, using the actual set from People’s Light’s mainstage production, offering participants an authentic, professional theatre environment.
This summer’s Performance Lab not only offers exceptional artistic growth but also emphasizes commitment and discipline. In addition to daily training (Monday-Friday, 9:00 AM-4:00 PM), extra masterclasses and rehearsals will be scheduled in advance. Enrollment is required, and need-based scholarships are available to ensure access for all qualified students.
