FarmerJawn founder Christa Barfield has received statewide recognition for her community-led farming initiative, writes Hilary Danailova for City & State Pennsylvania.

City & State Pennsylvania named Barfield to their 2025 40-Under-40 List. The annual list honors twenty and thirty-year-olds across the state who leave a powerful impact on their communities.

The list recognized Barfield for FarmerJawn, her community-supported agriculture (CSA) project that has provided local foods to over 30,000 people.

Currently, as the largest Black woman-owned regenerative farming project in the country, FarmerJawn stretches over 128 acres across three locations in Philadelphia, Montgomery, and Chester Counties.

FarmerJawn aims to reconnect urban populations with farming practices to support personal, community, and environmental health. The CSA uses regenerative farming practices to provide fresh foods to the local community through subscriptions and in-person storefronts.

Recently, a new storefront opened on April 15 at 1225 E. Street Rd. in West Chester.

Previously, Barfield worked in healthcare administration for a decade before her venture into agriculture. After meeting local farmers on a solo trip to Martinique in 2018, she was inspired to introduce sustainable farming practices back home in Philadelphia.

Barfield shared that the wild success of FarmerJawn is both important to the community and personally fulfilling. Barfield said, “It’s beautiful to be able to say that so many people in our community have eaten something we’ve grown. We’re connecting people back to their food.”
