Strafford’s Nick Mead is taking time to reflect on his team’s success at the Paris 2024 Olympics, writes Michael Bradley for Main Line Today.
Along with three teammates, Mead secured gold in the men’s four without a coxswain category, the first time a U.S. team has secured the medal in that category since 1960.
Following a close loss in the eight-person rowing category in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, Mead worked with the team to train harder for Paris. The training regimen included rowing longer distances and experimenting with different boats and oars, as well as adjusting the team’s nutrition.
A graduate of Episcopal Academy, he was originally a lacrosse player, but ultimately found great success as a high school rower after trying indoor rowing during the lacrosse off-season.
Mead went on to attend Princeton University and help the crew team place third and fourth at the national championships during his sophomore and senior years respectively. After graduating in 2017, Mead helped the men’s national team secure medals at the 2017 and 2023 World Championships, wins that ultimately led to his Olympic gold in 2024.
Mead shared that while the Olympic win was a joyful relief after his long journey, he is now shifting his focus to a new business pursuit, but he confirmed that he will still always love rowing.
