Philadelphia Navy Yard Receives $30M Grant from Pennsylvania for Redevelopment

Gov. Josh Shapiro and the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania awarded the Navy Yard a $30 million grant, which will be used to design and support new advanced manufacturing and commercial space in the area.

Philadelphia Navy Yard has received a $30 million grant from the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania to prepare shovel-ready sites aimed at attracting businesses to the development, writes Paul Schwedelson for the Philadelphia Business Journal.

Ensemble Investments and Mosaic Development Partners, the Navy Yard developers, will use the funds for a 54-acre section of the property. The land will then be subdivided into six lots designed to support 500,000 to 700,000 square feet of new advanced manufacturing and commercial space.

The funding will support the development of roadways, utilities, soil excavation, grading, and stormwater management, helping to advance the Navy Yard’s emergence as a hub for life sciences, research, and manufacturing.

“This investment accelerates our shared vision to create pad-ready sites to continue to attract top-tier businesses and position Philadelphia as a national hub for advanced industries,” said Mark Seltzer, managing director of Ensemble.

The Ensemble/Mosaic joint venture is currently part of a $6 billion master plan to redevelop 109 acres at the South Philadelphia site. They were awarded development rights by Philadelphia Industrial Development Corp. in 2020.

The plans include the construction of 9 million square feet of space, including manufacturing space for life sciences companies, apartments, and retail space.
