Historic Penn Valley Carriage House with Private Golf Greens Hits Market for $2.3M

This $2.3M Penn Valley estate with three golf greens and deep local history redefines Main Line luxury living.

A rare blend of Main Line history and modern luxury is for sale in Penn Valley, complete with a (partial) golf course, writes Ryan Mulligan for the Philadelphia Business Journal.

Listed at $2.3 million, this 7,400+ square foot home sits on 1.6 acres near Gladwyne and features six bedrooms, seven bathrooms, and three backyard golf greens designed for serious practice or playful putting. But the home’s past is just as impressive as its present.

Originally built in 1901 as the carriage house for the Penshurst Estate, the property was part of an expansive 500-acre estate created by industrialist Percival Roberts. While the estate’s 75-room mansion was demolished in 1939 after a dispute over a proposed township incinerator, the carriage house was spared—and eventually transformed into a stunning private residence.

Designed by noted architects Peabody and Stearns, the home retains its Jacobean character. It has exposed stone, wood beams, and soaring 30-foot ceilings in the great room. There’s even a spiral staircase in the guest suite leading to a tucked-away lower-level primary suite.

The home is owned by Christina Funston and was previously owned by the late Lance Funston, a business executive and philanthropist. Lance was also a one-time alternate driver for the American Samoan bobsled team.
