Phoenixville Athletic Field Named for Female Athlete, A First for the District’s History

Judy Wolstenholme with Phoenixville School Board President Scott Overland.

Phoenixville Area School District has recently named an athletic space after impressive local athlete, Judy Wolstenholme, writes Evan Brandt for The Daily Local News.

This is the first time that the school district has named an athletic facility after a female athlete. The field, formerly known as Turf 2, will now be known with a name of greater importance: Judy (Smiley) Wolstenholme.

She played lacrosse, field hockey, basketball, softball, and golf for the district. She later spent seven years on Team USA Field Hockey and nine years on Team USA Lacrosse.

Wolstenholme’s impact has had a wide reach, spanning across many sports and younger athletes. With several accolades under her belt, she has learned valuable lessons in sportsmanship, gender equality, and life.

“The opportunity to play for the United States, my country, in two different sports was a sheer miracle,” she said. “The opportunity to play all over the world, I can’t even begin to tell you what it meant to my life. I will never forget Phoenixville.”
